Vascular Remodeling of Visceral Arteries Following Interruption of the Splenic Artery During Liver Transplantation

Damiano Patrono, Eloisa Franchi, Fabio Guarasci, Germana Bartoli, Elisabetta Nada, Federica Rigo, Antonio Ottobrelli, Paolo Fonio, Mauro Salizzoni, Renato Romagnoli – 18 March 2019 – Splenic artery (SA) ligation can be performed during liver transplantation (LT) to avoid portal hyperperfusion, which is involved in the pathogenesis of both small‐for‐size and SA syndrome. The SA can also be used as an inflow for arterial reconstruction.

Underestimation of Liver Transplantation for Alcoholic Hepatitis in the National Transplant Database

Brian P. Lee, Gene Y. Im, John P. Rice, Ethan Weinberg, Christine Hsu, Oren K. Fix, George Therapondos, Hyosun Han, David W. Victor, Sheila Eswaran, Haripriya Maddur, Norah A. Terrault – 18 March 2019 – Alcohol‐associated liver disease (ALD) can be coded in United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) as either alcoholic cirrhosis or alcoholic hepatitis (AH), without having specific criteria to assign either diagnosis.

Medication‐Related Problems in Outpatients With Decompensated Cirrhosis: Opportunities for Harm Prevention

Kelly L. Hayward, Preya J. Patel, Patricia C. Valery, Leigh U. Horsfall, Catherine Y. Li, Penny L. Wright, Caroline J. Tallis, Katherine A. Stuart, Katharine M. Irvine, W. Neil Cottrell, Jennifer H. Martin, Elizabeth E. Powell – 18 March 2019 – People with decompensated cirrhosis are often prescribed a complex regimen of therapeutic and prophylactic medications. In other chronic diseases, polypharmacy increases the risk of medication misadventure and medication‐related problems (MRPs), with associated increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs.

Spermidine Confers Liver Protection by Enhancing NRF2 Signaling Through a MAP1S‐Mediated Noncanonical Mechanism

Pengfei Liu, Montserrat Rojo Vega, Matthew Dodson, Fei Yue, Boyun Shi, Deyu Fang, Eli Chapman, Leyuan Liu, Donna D. Zhang – 15 March 2019 – Spermidine (SPD), a naturally occurring polyamine, has been recognized as a caloric restriction mimetic that confers health benefits, presumably by inducing autophagy. Recent studies have reported that oral administration of SPD protects against liver fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis through activation of microtubule associated protein 1S (MAP1S)–mediated autophagy.

State‐Based Liver Distribution: Broad Sharing With Less Harm to Vulnerable and Underserved Communities Compared With Concentric Circles

Raymond J. Lynch, Fei Ye, Quanhu Sheng, Zhiguo Zhao, Seth J. Karp – 14 March 2019 – Allocation of livers for transplantation faces regulatory pressure to move toward broader sharing. A current proposal supported by the United Network for Organ Sharing Board of Directors relies on concentric circles, but its effect on socioeconomic inequities in access to transplant services is poorly understood.

Lnc‐UCID Promotes G1/S Transition and Hepatoma Growth by Preventing DHX9‐Mediated CDK6 Down‐regulation

Yun‐Long Wang, Jin‐Yu Liu, Jin‐E Yang, Xiao‐Man Yu, Zhan‐Li Chen, Ya‐Jing Chen, Ming Kuang, Ying Zhu, Shi‐Mei Zhuang – 13 March 2019 – Although thousands of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been annotated, only a limited number of them have been functionally characterized. Here, we identified an oncogenic lncRNA, named lnc‐UCID (lncRNA up‐regulating CDK6 by interacting with DHX9). Lnc‐UCID was up‐regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and a higher lnc‐UCID level was correlated with shorter recurrence‐free survival of HCC patients.
