Higher Mortality in Pediatric Liver Transplant Candidates With Sarcopenia

Julia M. Boster, Lorna P. Browne, Zhaoxing Pan, Wenru Zhou, Peter F. Ehrlich, Shikha S. Sundaram – 22 February 2021 – Little is known about the impact of sarcopenia (reduced muscle mass and function) in pediatric chronic liver disease. We compared psoas muscle surface area (PMSA), measured at the 4th lumbar vertebrae, in children listed for liver transplantation (LT) to that of healthy controls and studied the impact of sarcopenia on transplant‐associated outcomes.

Fructose Protects Against Acetaminophen‐Induced Hepatotoxicity Mainly by Activating the Carbohydrate‐Response Element‐Binding Protein α–Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 Axis in Mice

Deqiang Zhang, Sujuan Wang, Erin Ospina, Omar Shabandri, Daniel Lank, Jephte Y. Akakpo, Zifeng Zhao, Meichan Yang, Jun Wu, Hartmut Jaeschke, Pradip Saha, Xin Tong, Lei Yin – 22 February 2021 – Acetaminophen (N‐acetyl‐para‐aminophenol [APAP]) overdose is the most common cause of drug‐induced liver injury in the Western world and has limited therapeutic options. As an important dietary component intake, fructose is mainly metabolized in liver, but its impact on APAP‐induced liver injury is not well established.

Living Donor Liver Transplantation in the United States: Evolution of Frequency, Outcomes, Center Volumes, and Factors Associated With Outcomes

Thomas G. Cotter, Mohamad Minhem, Jennifer Wang, Thoetchai Peeraphatdit, Fares Ayoub, Anjana Pillai, Roberto Hernandez‐Alejandro, Diego Sabato, Michael Charlton – 21 February 2021 – Recent modifications in organ allocation policies and increases in chronic liver diseases may have resulted in important changes in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the United States. We examined the trends, outcomes, and factors associated with outcomes in adult LDLT.

A. Sidney Barritt, Stephanie Watkins, Norman Gitlin, Samuel Klein, Anna S. Lok, Rohit Loomba, Cheryl Schoen, K. Rajender Reddy, Huy Ngoc Trinh, Andrea R. Mospan, Miriam B. Vos, L. Michael Weiss, Kenneth Cusi, Brent A. Neuschwander‐Tetri, Arun J. Sanyal – 20 February 2021 – Much of the current data on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are derived from biopsy‐based studies that may introduce ascertainment and selection bias. Selection of patients for liver biopsy has implications for clinical practice and the reported epidemiology of NAFLD.
