Population prevalence and symptom associations of autonomic dysfunction in primary biliary cirrhosis

Julia L. Newton, Mark Hudson, Phaedra Tachtatzis, Kathryn Sutcliffe, Jessie Pairman, Jennifer A. Burt, David E. J. Jones – 30 May 2007 – Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) frequently experience significant fatigue thought to result from as‐yet‐unidentified central nervous system (CNS)‐mediated processes. Pilot studies have suggested that autonomic dysfunction is a frequent occurrence in PBC and may contribute to the pathogenesis of this fatigue.

Initial clinical results of orthotopic liver transplantation for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis

Fuqiang Li, Meng Yang, Bo Li, Lunang Yan, Yong Zen, Tingfu Wen, Jichun Zao – 30 May 2007 – We analyzed the features of 7 patients who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) from April 2001 to April 2006 for incurable hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in view of the technical features of the OLT, incidence, and type of complications, as well as patient survival.

Can the model for end‐stage liver disease be used to predict the prognosis in patients with Budd‐Chiari syndrome?

Sarwa Darwish Murad, W. Ray Kim, Piet C. de Groen, Patrick S. Kamath, Michael Malinchoc, Dominique‐Charles Valla, Harry L.A. Janssen – 30 May 2007 – The model for end‐stage liver disease (MELD) is a widely accepted and objective scoring system for end‐stage liver disease (ESLD) but has never been evaluated for Budd‐Chiari syndrome (BCS). We investigated whether MELD can be used to predict survival in patients with BCS. Patients with BCS (n = 237) were obtained from a large international study.

Hepatorenal syndrome: A proposal for kidney after liver transplantation (KALT)

Richard Ruiz, Yousri M. Barri, Linda W. Jennings, Srinath Chinnakotla, Robert M. Goldstein, Marlon F. Levy, Greg J. McKenna, Henry B. Randall, Edmund Q. Sanchez, Goran B. Klintmalm – 30 May 2007 – Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a well‐recognized complication of end‐stage liver disease. Once thought to be a reversible condition with liver transplantation (LT) alone, HRS may directly contribute to the requirement for long‐term dialysis posttransplant. As a result, discussion has now focused on whether or when a kidney allograft should be considered for these patients.

Ethanol and fish oil induce NFκB transactivation of the collagen α2(I) promoter through lipid peroxidation–driven activation of the PKC‐PI3K‐Akt pathway

Natalia Nieto – 30 May 2007 – To analyze whether fish oil, as a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids from the n‐3 series, could synergize with ethanol to promote collagen I upregulation in vivo, collagen α2(I) promoter‐βGal (COL1A2‐βGal) transgenic mice were fed a diet enriched in fish oil in the presence of ethanol (ethanol group) or dextrose (control group).

Tonsil enlargement after liver transplantation in adults—reason enough for tonsillectomy? Two cases of tonsillar posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disease

Krzysztof Mucha, Bartosz Foroncewicz, Kazimierz Niemczyk, Bogna Ziarkiewicz‐Wróblewska, Olimpia Stanisławek‐Sut, Krzysztof Zieniewicz, Marek Krawczyk, Leszek Pączek – 30 May 2007 – Posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is a well‐known complication of solid organ and bone marrow transplantation. It is agreed that the main causes of PTLD are chronic infection with Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV); the intensity, rather then the type, of immunosuppression used; and underlying recipient disease.
