Best Practices in Large Database Clinical Epidemiology Research in Hepatology: Barriers and Opportunities

Nadim Mahmud, David S. Goldberg, Therese Bittermann – 14 July 2021 – With advances in computing and information technology, large health care research databases are becoming increasingly accessible to investigators across the world. These rich, population‐level data sources can serve many purposes, such as to generate “real‐world evidence,” to enhance disease phenotyping, or to identify unmet clinical needs, among others.

Fatty Liver Is an Independent Risk Factor for Delayed Recovery from Anesthesia

Mark Shapses, Lin Tang, Austin Layne, Andrea Beri, Yaron Rotman – 14 July 2021 – Fatty liver (FL) is associated with altered activity of hepatic drug‐metabolizing enzymes, but the clinical significance is unknown. Many anesthetic agents are metabolized in the liver. We aimed to determine whether FL impacts recovery from anesthesia as a surrogate for altered drug metabolism. This was a single‐center, retrospective, case‐control study of all adults who underwent anesthesia and concurrent abdominal imaging (n = 2,021) in a hospital setting.

Temporal Trends and Evolving Outcomes After Simultaneous Liver‐Kidney Transplantation: Results from the US SLKT Consortium

Giuseppe Cullaro, Pratima Sharma, Jennifer Jo, Jasmine Rassiwala, Lisa B. VanWagner, Randi Wong, Jennifer C. Lai, John Magee, Aaron Schluger, Pranab Barman, Yuval A. Patel, Kara Walter, Scott W. Biggins, Elizabeth C. Verna – 14 July 2021 – We aimed to understand the contemporary changes in the characteristics and the determinants of outcomes among simultaneous liver‐kidney transplantation (SLKT) recipients at 6 liver transplantation centers in the United States. We retrospectively enrolled SLKT recipients between 2002 and 2017 in the US Multicenter SLKT Consortium.

LiverLearning®: 2021 Webinar: Gaps in Advance Care Planning at Transplant Centers: Call for Action

There is increasing interest to integrate palliative care (PC) within routine practice of decompensated cirrhosis to enhance and inform clinical care. It has shown to improve patient- provider communication, provider awareness of symptoms, tailored symptom management enhance quality of life, ultimately with a better end of life care. There is minimal knowledge on what key elements of PC can inform care, particularly if advance care planning (ACP) has a role to play within Transplant Evaluation.Arpan A. Patel Aran A.

Hepatic Nervous System in Development, Regeneration, and Disease

Bess M. Miller, Isaac M. Oderberg, Wolfram Goessling – 12 July 2021 – The liver is innervated by autonomic and sensory fibers of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems that regulate liver function, regeneration, and disease. Although the importance of the hepatic nervous system in maintaining and restoring liver homeostasis is increasingly appreciated, much remains unknown about the specific mechanisms by which hepatic nerves both influence and are influenced by liver diseases.

LiverLearning®: Fundamentals of Liver Disease - Cirrhosis 2.0

DESCRIPTION There is currently an anticipated shortage of trained providers capable of diagnosing and treating different liver diseases. As a result of this increased demand and limited specialists in the field, more and more front line providers are faced with these patients and do not have the experience or resources that will allow them to manage them appropriately.
