Biography

Mitchell Mah'moud is a Professor of Medicine and teaching faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University School of Medicine where he participates in the training of Gastroenterology Fellows. Between 1997 to 2000, he was Assistant Professor of Medicine as well as the Director of Clinical Hepatology and the Associate Program Director of the GI Fellowship in the Division of Digestive Diseases at the University of South Carolina in Columbia
He attended schools in Ghana and Senegal and received his medical degree from the Ibadan Medical School in Nigeria and the University College Hospital. He subsequently completed his residency training in Internal Medicine from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Thereafter, he underwent his Fellowship Training in Digestive Diseases at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. From 1996-97, he served as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine at the Yale Medical School and an Attending Gastroenterologist at the West Haven VA Medical Center, a teaching campus of the Yale Medical School. Dr. Mah'moud also has a doctorate degree in Theology. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). He also served on numerous leadership positions including the Ethics Committee of the AGA, CALD SIG, Clinical Practice SIG, the Annual Meeting Education, CME and the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Committees of the AASLD. He was a founding Executive Board member of the AGA Center for GI Innovation and Technology. He is an External Reviewer for GI related issues for the North Carolina Medical Board and peer reviewer for several journals as well as the abstract reviewer for the annual scientific meetings of the ACG, AASLD and DDW. He is an author of several research and academic publications.
Dr Mah'moud maintains an active practice with focus on liver diseases (including pretransplant and post transplant care), general gastroenterology and therapeutic endoscopic procedures with RMG. He has also been an investigator in many clinical trials in liver diseases. He is a frequent guest speaker and moderator on liver diseases at the national and international GI meetings.
Mitch Mahmoud is married and together they have three daughters. On his free time, he is active in church, undertakes short term medical missions and the conducts bible studies in the local Prisons. Some of his personal interests include traveling with his family, soccer, basketball, reading, movies, jogging and engaging in fun activities with his family.
