Biography

Professor Philippa Easterbrook BSc (Hons), MD, MPH, DTM&H, FRCP Professor Philippa Easterbrook is a senior infectious disease and public health researcher, epidemiologist and physician, who has spent more than three decades to clinical care, research, and scale-up of the global response to the HIV epidemic, and the last 8 years also to the global elimination of hepatitis C and B infection. She is currently based in the HIV, Hepatitis and STI department at the World Health Organisation Headquarters in Geneva, where she has led and coordinated the scientific research and evidence-base and development of WHO global normative guidance in HIV and viral hepatitis B and C infection, alongside implementation of testing and treatment scale-up in low and middle-income countries. She led the first WHO guidelines on hepatitis B care and treatment in 2015, hepatitis B and C testing guidelines in 2017; the development of a global hepatitis elimination strategy in 2016, the first guidance on country validation of elimination of viral hepatitis in 2021, new guidance on HCV simplified service delivery and diagnostics, and treatment of children and adolescents. For eleven years, she was Head of Department, Professor of HIV Medicine, and consultant physician in Infectious Diseases at King´s College London, and also Head of Research at the Infectious Diseases Institute in Uganda. Philippa has served as a Member of the UK Medical Research Council Infection and Immunity Committee, and was vice-chair of the World Health Organization Guidelines Review Committee. Her research has encompassed epidemiology, clinical trials, operational and qualitative research, and laboratory-based studies in HIV.
