Stavros Nicholas Stavropoulos
Biography
Dr. Stavropoulos was educated at Yale (BS, suma culm laude) and Columbia (MD, AOA) and received all his clinical training at Columbia Presbyterian. He has served as a leading advanced endoscopist at Columbia, Temple, Winthrop/NYU-Long Island and currently Archbold Memorial Hospital and Mount Sinai-South Nassau. He pioneered ESD in the US (2005) and is the 1st Western operator-2nd globally after Haruhiro Inoue- to perform a POEM (case report in GIE 2010), and 1st Western operator to perform STER & free-hand EFTR. He led the effort culminating in the SAGES/ASGE POEM white paper (GIE, Surg Endo 2014) and has recently published the largest Western single-center series of POEM (GIE 2021) & ESD (CGH 2020). He is continuing to innovate, with the Anti-reflux POEM being his latest contribution. He founded Long Island Live, a pre-eminent 3rd space live endoscopy course in the US. He is fellow of the ASGE & AGA, member of SAGES and one of a small number of US elite endoscopists honored with fellowship to the Japanese Society of GI Endoscopy (JGES).
