Dr. Samuel Sigal is Director of Hepatology at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. His research activities have focused on complications of cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, and hepatitis B in the Bronx West African community. There are approximately 80-100,000 individuals of West African origin who reside in the Bronx. Hepatitis B is endemic in the community. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to care that include cultural, stigma, limited understanding and access to medical care that adversely affect screening, vaccination, and treatment. In his presentation he will describe the development of a highly effective community screening program that was initiated to provide information in a culturally acceptable manner but rapidly expanded into a screening, vaccination, and health promotion program.
