Peter G. Stock, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Surgery at UCSF, Surgical Director of the Pediatric Renal Transplantation Program, and Surgical Director of the Pancreas Transplant Program. He was trained at the University of Minnesota, completing a surgical residency before coming to UCSF for a transplant fellowship. He joined the UCSF faculty in 1992. Dr. Stock specializes in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation.
Dr. Stock has been funded by both the NIH and JDRF (now Breakthrough T1D) to assess the safety and efficacy of cellular transplantation for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. He was recently awarded funding from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to develop an easily accessible site (forearm) for beta cell replacement therapies which can ultimately be translated to stem cell derived products.
He served as the Chair of the Department of Surgery Research Committee, and in that capacity helped to establish UCSF Surgery as one of the top research programs for surgical residents in the U.S. He is the principal investigator of the NIH FAVOR-T32 Training grant for transplant surgery. He has served as the PI on two multicenter NIH grants studying the safety and efficacy of solid organ transplantation in people with HIV, which led to the passage of the Hope Act lifting the ban on transplant organs between HIV-positive donors and recipients.
He has served as Chair of the UNOS Kidney Committee, Pancreas Committee and currently serves on the International Ad Hoc Committee on Transplantation. He served as Chair of the ASTS Education/Fellowship Committee and served as the President of the ASTS. He recently served as the Chair of the TTS Ethics Committee and is currently the North American councilor to the TTS. In that capacity, he is focusing on the development of self-sustainable transplant programs in sub-Saharan Africa.
