Biography

Dr. Manhal Izzy is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. He serves as the director for the Transplant Hepatology fellowship program and for Hepatology research. Dr. Izzy received his medical degree in 2004 from University of Baghdad School of Medicine in Iraq. After residency training in Iraq and immigration to the United States, Dr. Izzy pursued clinical research training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Montefiore Medical Center of Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he later did his Gastroenterology fellowship. Prior to recruitment by Vanderbilt in 2018, he had completed Transplant Hepatology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His research investigates the cardiometabolic disorders and clinical outcomes in patients with chronic liver disease and liver transplant recipients with a special focus on Cirrhotic Cardiomyopathy. He is one of the founders of the international multidisciplinary Cirrhotic Cardiomyopathy Consortium that redefined this disease in 2020. Dr. Izzy co-founded the cardiovascular disease in liver transplant special interest group at the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) and served on its steering committee over the past 5 years. Dr. Izzy has authored/co-authored more than eighty original articles, reviews, and book chapters. He serves on the editorial board of the Liver Transplantation journal. He is one of the writing group members for the AASLD guidelines for the non-graft related post-transplant care. Dr. Izzy has been remarkably involved in medical education and has organized multiple liver transplant educational courses nationally and internationally. His contributions have been well-recognized through the accolades he has received institutionally and internationally including but not limited to the Division of Gastroenterology Outstanding Teacher Award, Department of Medicine Best Faculty Teacher Award, Department of Medicine Award for outstanding contributions to house staff mentorship, and the recent chairmanship of the education and scholarship committee of ILTS.
