Dr. Jorge A. Bezerra is Professor of Pediatrics, Chairman of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and Pediatrician-In-Chief of Children's Health of Dallas. He holds the Robert L. Moore Endowed Chair of Pediatrics.
Dr. Bezerra's current studies investigate the etiology and pathogenic mechanisms of biliary atresia. He has mapped how immune cells and soluble factors cause epithelial injury and obstruction of bile ducts and gene expression signatures that predicts clinical outcomes. His current studies focus on understanding the innate epithelial defects that make children susceptible to biliary injury and how the microbiome participates in pathogenesis of disease. His approach combines novel human liver and biliary organoids containing different cell lineages to model the human disease and discover new therapies to improve clinical outcome of children with biliary atresia.
Dr. Bezerra is a Past-President of the American Association for Studies of Liver Disease (AASLD) and is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians.
