Biography

Dr. Richard Moreau is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board and Honorary Director of the Grifols Chair, both at the European Foundation for the Study of Chronic Liver Failure (EF Clif), Barcelona, Spain. He is also Consultant in Hepatology, Liver Unit, Beaujon Hospital, Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris (APHP), Clichy and Emeritus Senior Scientist at the INSERM (French NIH), Paris, both in France. He obtained his MD degree in 1983 at the University of Paris, France. From 1983 to 1996, he was full-time physician at Intensive Care Units from Ile-de-France hospitals. In 1996, he joined the Liver Unit at Beaujon hospital as Consultant in Hepatology and got the position of Senior Scientist at the INSERM, and Principal Investigator at the INSERM Department located at Beaujon Hospital and involved in research on Liver Diseases. His main research interest is pathophysiology and treatment of complications of cirrhosis, in particular systemic inflammation and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). In 2009, he was among the European hepatologists who created the EASL-Chronic Liver Failure (CLIF) Consortium, which is fully dedicated to research on cirrhosis. He was Principal Investigator of the first study (CANONIC study) performed under the umbrella of the EASL-CLIF Consortium. This prospective study enrolled 1343 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis admitted to 29 liver units from 8 European countries. The CANONIC study provided an evidence-based definition for ACLF. He was also Principal Investigator of the ACLARA study that recruited 1274 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis in 44 hospitals from 7 Latin American countries. The objectives of the ACLARA study was to assess the role of ethnicity, genetic ancestry, sociodemographic factors, in poor outcomes (ACLF, short-term death) of acutely decompensated cirrhosis. In 2016, the EASL-CLIF Consortium was enriched with a new branch called Grifols Chair; this enrichment gave rise to the EF Clif. The Grifols Chair is in charge to develop translational research on acutely decompensated cirrhosis. Dr. Moreau was Deputy Director of the Grifols Chair (2016-2021) and therefore involved in the development of multi-omics approaches (including metabolomics, lipidomics, transcriptomics, GWAS) using biological samples from patients enrolled in the clinical studies sponsored by EF CLIF He was successively Special Section Editor (2020-2021), Senior Editor of Journal of Hepatology (2015-19) and Associate Editor (2010-14), at Journal of Hepatology. He was also Associate Editor at Liver International (2007-2009). He is member of EASL, AASLD (FAASLD since 2022), APASL, French Association for the Study of the Liver (AFEF), Club Francophone pour l’Etude de l’Hypertension Portale.
