Harmeet Malhi
Biography
Dr. Malhi is a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a joint appointment in Physiology and a Professor of Medicine and Physiology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. She currently serves as the research chair for the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She attended medical school at the University College of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, which was followed by research training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. Following her Clinical Investigator training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and Advanced Hepatology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine, she was recruited to the staff of Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 2011. She was named a Mayo Clinic Clinical-Investigator in 2022 and inducted in the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2023. Dr. Malhi’s laboratory studies lipotoxic endoplasmic reticulum stress, with particular research interest in mechanisms of liver injury and inflammation in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis pathogenesis. Her research laboratory focuses on lipotoxicity, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the role of extracellular vesicle lipid mediators in cell-to-cell communication in the pathogenesis of liver diseases. She also has an interest in biomarker development in nonalcoholic and alcoholic steatohepatitis. Her clinical interests span nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, hepatobiliary malignancies, and liver transplantation. She also maintains a practice in GI procedures. She is a frequent contributor to CME courses offered by the Mayo Clinic in her areas of clinical expertise. Dr. Malhi currently serves as a deputy editor for Hepatology and on the editorial board of Hepatology Communications. She has published over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts, editorials, and book chapters in journals such as Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Biological Chemistry and the Journal of Lipid Research. She has served as a reviewer for numerous journals including Hepatology and the Journal of Lipid Research. Dr. Malhi is the principal investigator of two NIH grants and several foundation grants. She is on study section for the American Liver Foundation, AGA, AASLD, and a standing member of Hepatobiliary Pathophysiology study section of the Center for Scientific Review, NIH.
