Biography

Dr. Spear earned his PhD in Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania. This was followed by a postdoctoral position with at Princeton University with Shirley Tilghman, where he studies control of alpha-fetoprotein regulation. He became a faculty member at the University of Kentucky in 1989, where he is currently Professor of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics. His research investigates transcriptional control of gene expression during liver development and disease, as well as zonal gene regulation, with an emphasis on the use of mouse models. He has had numerous NIH grants and served on multiple NIH study sections and is current chair of the Hepatobiliary Pathophysiology (HBPP) study section. He has received numerous teaching and mentoring awards at the University of Kentucky.
