Application Criteria: Private or Academic Clinical Practice

All of the following criteria must be met.

  • Current membership in AASLD and a minimum of 10 years membership preceding the request for Fellowship status
  • Actively caring for patients with liver disease for the last 10 years
  • Completion of a post-doctoral level training or equivalent, (e.g. GI or advanced hepatology fellowship, surgical subspecialty, PhD, MPH, APRN)
  • In academic or clinical practice for at least 10 years since completion of post-doctoral training
  • Current or past leadership position in AASLD or any other liver-related society, (e.g. EASL, APASL, ALEH, ALF), or any other non-liver related medical society at a state, national or international level, (e.g. AGA, ACP)
  • Evidence of service to the community (e.g. ALF activities)
  • Attendance in at least five Liver Meetings® in the last 10 years
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from current AASLD regular or international members

Application Criteria: Basic or Clinical Research

All the following criteria must be met.

  • Current membership in AASLD and a minimum of 10 years membership preceding the request for Fellowship status
  • Faculty appointment in a teaching hospital or academic medical center at a rank of Associate Professor, Professor, or equivalent
  • Completion of a post-doctoral level training or equivalent (e.g. GI or advanced hepatology fellowship, surgical subspecialty, PhD, MPH, APRN)
  • Current or past leadership position in AASLD or any other liver-related society, (e.g. EASL, APASL, ALEH, ALF), or any other non-liver related medical society at a state, national or international level, (e.g. AGA, ACP)
  • At least 20 peer-reviewed full publications related to liver disease
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from current AASLD regular or international members

Required Documents for your Fellowship Application

All applications must include the following documents.


A current and complete curriculum vitae or resume of the applicant

The curriculum vitae or resume should include:

  1. Identification of whether articles were published in referred or non-referred journals
  2. Differentiation between invited lectures, presentations, addresses, and symposia and whether these were presented nationally or internationally
  3. Identification of service to AASLD or other liver related society’s (EASL, APASL, ALEH, ALF) or any other non-liver related medical society at a state, national or international level, (e.g. AGA, ACP)


Letters of support

Two (2) letters of support from current AASLD members should:

  • Indicate the institution or facility with which the author of the letter is affiliated and in what capacity the author works with, has worked with, or otherwise personally or professionals knows the applicant
  • Provide an explicit account of how the applicant meets one or more of the criteria supported by appropriate details and examples drawn from the applicant’s professional career
  • Reflect genuine knowledge and consideration of the applicant’s qualifications for the membership category of Fellow

For those applicants who have been published, provide a list of "significant" published papers, monographs, books and book chapters.

Note: This list only needs to be submitted if this information is not included as a part of the applicants curriculum vitae or resume.
